Drug Traffickers Sentenced to Prison

A Wyoming man and two men from Colorado were recently sentenced for their involvement in a drug trafficking ring that was responsible for bringing large quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl into the Casper area. U.S. District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson sentenced 40-year-old Cole Herrick of Casper to 10 years in prison to be followed by five years of supervised release for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl. Herrick was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment and $500 community restitution.

Judge Johnson sentenced 44-year-old Scott Buchanan of Denver to 17 years in prison and ordered him to pay $500 in community restitution and a $300 special assessment for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. Buchanan’s brother, 48-year-old Chad Buchanan was sentenced to 12 years in prison and ordered to pay $500 in community restitution and a $200 special assessment for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

According to court documents, the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation began investigating Herrick in August of 2022 when Casper Police Department officers found Herrick in a motel room with a significant amount of methamphetamine. Herrick admitted to distributing methamphetamine in Casper. DCI agents learned that Herrick frequently traveled to Denver, Colorado, to pick up methamphetamine and fentanyl from Chad Buchanan.  The defendants were indicted by the grand jury in January 2023 and pleaded guilty in April and May. In total, the defendants were responsible for distributing more than 15 kilograms of methamphetamine and more than 100 grams of fentanyl.
