The U.S. Senate this week, by a 81 to 14 vote, passed a resolution that blocks a Washington, D.C. crime bill that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle in Congress view as weak on crime. The U.S. House in February voted 250 to 173 to reverse the legislation. The Washington, D.C. City Council passed the bill in an effort to overhaul the criminal code in the nation’s capital. U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) recently spoke on the Senate floor about the controversial bill.

The D.C. City Council passed the bill in January and it was vetoed by Mayor Muriel Bowser. The council voted to override the veto by a vote of 12 to 1. Barrasso said under the new criminal code, the maximum sentence for armed carjacking would be cut almost in half. The bill would also remove most mandatory minimum sentences and lessen penalties for a number of violent crimes. President Joe Biden said Thursday that he will not veto the resolution.
