Sheridan County Man Sentenced to Jail for Property Destruction

A Sheridan County man was sentenced for felony property destruction Tuesday in Fourth Judicial District Court. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.

At a change of plea hearing June 2 in District Court, 40-year-old Derek Wood pleaded no contest to the charge of felony property destruction. The no contest plea was not part of a plea agreement made with the State. According to court documents, on October 24, 2025, a Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office Deputy who was working security at a Big Horn Rams football game was approached by a woman who reported that her 2025 Ford Bronco had been vandalized in the school parking lot during the game.

A subsequent investigation, which included video surveillance of the parking lot, led to the arrest of Wood for keying the Ford Bronco while the owner of the vehicle was attending the football game. At sentencing Tuesday, District Court Judge Darci Phillips imposed a 2 to 5 year prison sentence, suspended in lieu of a 90-day-split sentence to be served in the Sheridan County Detention Center followed by three years of supervised probation.

Wood will receive credit for any time that he’s served of presentence confinement. He was ordered to pay $325 in court costs and assessments and $500 in public defender fees. A hearing to determine the restitution in the case will be held approximately 30 days from Tuesday’s sentencing hearing.
