SCLT Explore History: Sheridan County’s Coal Camps
Sheridan Community Land Trust will explore the communities, people, and industry that helped shape northeastern Wyoming during two October Explore History programs.
The Coal Camps of Sheridan County will be presented Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at The Hub on Smith in Sheridan and Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Tongue River Valley Community Center in Dayton.
Long before Sheridan County became known for its ranches and thriving communities, coal mining fueled the local economy and gave rise to dozens of bustling coal camps.
Drawing on his research and article, The Coal Camps of Sheridan County, SCLT Director of History Kevin Knapp will share the stories of these largely forgotten communities, the miners and families who called them home, and their lasting impact on the region.
Both SCLT Explore History programs are free and open to all. Learn more at https://sheridanclt.org/events/.
