At 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, in Kinnison Hall you will present the Sheridan College Symphony Orchestra “Heritage of Harmony.”
The Sheridan College Symphony Orchestra is comprised of students, instructors and Sheridan residents. Directed by Sheridan College Director of Strings and Orchestral Studies Dr. Mark Bergman, the orchestra is a collection of Sheridan’s talented orchestral performers.
The performance will feature Beethoven’s “King Stephen Overture,” as well as Antonín Dvořák’s “Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95,” also known as the “New World Symphony.” Sheridan College Director of Strings and Orchestral Studies Dr. Mark Bergman told listeners of Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse that although Dvořák may not be as well known as some composers, his collection of work is just as significant.
Dr. M. Bergman
According to Bergman, Dvořák wrote his symphony during his time in the United States and infused this symphony with melodies reminiscent of both his homeland and the landscapes of the New World. Its enduring popularity lies not only in its exquisite melodies and rich orchestration, but also in its ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia, longing, and hope, making it a timeless treasure of the orchestral repertoire.
