The Wyoming Department of Transportation has announced that a roundabout is the preferred alternative to improve safety and operations at the intersection of WY 332, WY 335, and U.S. 87, commonly known as the Big Horn Y intersection. The decision follows an extensive traffic study and significant public input.

WYDOT contracted with HDR to complete the Big Horn Y Intersection Study to address the public’s growing concerns regarding safety and efficiency at the busy junction. Data collection and feedback from the public revealed issues including near-miss crashes, drivers failing to yield, speeding, traffic congestion during peak hours, long wait times, and difficulties for pedestrians and cyclists. WYDOT District Traffic Engineer for NE Wyoming District 4 Michelle Edwards said that HDR followed a strict set of criteria for the study.

Based on detailed analysis and public feedback gathered through two online and one in-person meeting, the results determined that a roundabout and an all-way stop were the best alternatives to carry forward for in-depth analysis. Ultimately, the roundabout emerged as the preferred alternative due to its significant safety benefits and public support.

While a roundabout is the preferred solution for the long term, it is not currently funded in the six-year State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). WYDOT is considering a short-term solution of either reducing the posted speed limit at the intersection or eliminating the free right of U.S. 87, as per the recommendations in the study.

WYDOT appreciates the valuable input received from the public throughout this study and is committed to moving forward with the roundabout project to create a safer and more efficient intersection for all users. There is nothing wrong with this intersection. However, there is a problem with poor driving skills.

Just LEAVE IT THE HECK ALONE! Put a camera on the stop sign at the bottom of the hill behind the gas station!!! Nobody STOPS there! Then give tickets to those drivers! As a resident of Big Horn I’m so tired of this road being under construction; leave it alone!!! You people make it miserable for our residents just so you can spend MONEY on another project. Leave off already!!! Find somewhere else to spend money like another water treatment plant and a sewer system for Big Horn!!!

I don’t know if the volume of traffic there really warrants it but a round a bout would be great, I cringe to think about the people around here figuring it out though. Don’t worry Ed the GPET will not go to it it will be a state project, you know the SALES tax that is paid by people buying stuff, rather they are property OWNERS or not. Neither will property taxes those don’t go to the state.

Please spare us all from the stupid roundabout craze. Highway departments love them … not sure who’s paying for these studies… but drivers can’t figure round-abouts out. Just a week ago in my winter home I was taking a round about and was behind a woman who slowed down for the semi with a yield sign, she kindly waved him through. Arghhh!

Roundabouts are okay. I’m from Cheyenne, Wyoming, where there are several of them.

After driving all over this nation, I can assure you that you may increase safety with a round-about, but you will increase the road rage. Folks struggle to understand them… who has right-of-way, who yields, which lane to travel in and how to cross lanes in order to exit. As a truck driver… we risk creaming the little guys who don’t understand them and the swing of our truck Vs the lane of travel for our trailer, compounded by the exit always being on our blind side…. Makes them treacherous, at the least, for big rigs. Seeing as this is an intersection of 2 highways, this is a multi-use road, not just for passenger vehicles.

Well good. I hope that WYDOT does what is best for all of the people who use that intersection.

The only thing wrong with roundabouts is people who don’t want to adjust to anything New!!
