Sheridan County now has a new indoor play facility which could help keep the youngsters active when the weather isn’t outdoor play friendly.

The redesigned and rebuilt playland inside the Sheridan County YMCA opened last week.

The new playland is aquatic and pirate themed and also has a separate area for toddlers and a sensory room with activities for those who may not be able to handle the noise, generated by children who are playing in the main area.

Sandy Sare is the membership director at the Y.

She says the original plan was to disassemble the old playland in June and have the new playland open sometime in July, but due to some oversea shipping delays, the parts arrived later than planned.

As for the old playland, it had outlived its usefulness and life expectancy and not everyone could play on it.

“We got to talking about a need in the community and felt that the other playland had some restrictions that our organization wanted to overcome and that is the mobility constrictions. A lot of kids couldn’t get up in there if they had any kind of mobility, so this new layout allows them to all be a part of the playland.”

Sare adds the Y has had to change its playtime policy for the new playland.

Originally visitors could purchase an all-day pass, but since it’s a new playland, there is a risk of potential overcrowding, thus visitors can only be in the playland for up to 1 hour at a time.

Sare says that policy could change once the novelty of the playland wears off with the public.
