Sheridan County Undersheriff Lieutenant Devereaux Johnson suggested hunters take precautions and inform others of the area they will be hunting, just in case.

Accidents such as twisting an ankle or a fall can cause even the most experienced hunter trouble.

Inform others of your hunting destination, the more people that are informed, the better. Tell them or leave them a hand drawn map of your planned route.

If a hunter lives alone, the Undersheriff suggested leaving a note on the kitchen counter before heading to your hunting destination.

If hunters in a party make the decision to separate, ensure members know the routes of each member as well as when and where to meet back up. Once those plans are made, stick to them.

Other safety tips include:

  • Dress or carry clothing for the worst possible weather conditions.
  • Carry more food and water than one may believe they need.

If a hunter is overdue, notify the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office at 307-672-3455.
