Powder River District Ranger Thad Berrett gave a report to the Johnson County Commission at their recent meeting, touching on the Crazy Woman Canyon Road project, dispersed camping, and other topics on the Bighorn National Forest.

Berrett discussed the Crazy Woman Road project that has closed for the season and will resume in the spring.

He touched on the Buffalo Watershed Project with timber harvests that have thinned trees in the Clear Creek Watershed, which will hopefully reduce fire impacts on Buffalo’s watershed.

The BHNF is working on a closure order for dispersed camping, based on feedback received during this summer’s public meetings on the subject.

Currently the 14-day stay limits are in place from June until September but they are working on a year-round limit.

Another topic discussed was a half-mile buffer zone from Highway 16 for dispersed camping.

Berrett said there will be more public meetings held on specific topics concerning dispersed camping and other proposals for more public comment.

The alpha for the Bighorn National Forest is BNF. Bighorns as one word since 1908. BHNF is Black Hills NF.
