Dan’s Fish: tropical freshwater fish flourish in Sheridan

Dan Hodnett has always found small critters fascinating. As a boy, he would pass on watching television to go outside and turn over rocks to find what may be hiding underneath.

But it was the critters living under the surface of water that he loved most. The polliwogs and small newly hatched fish fry.

When Hodnett was in the 6th grade, his brother received an aquarium. It sparked a lifelong passion. Not for his brother, but for Dan. By the end of the summer Hodnett had three aquariums. By the time he turned 14 years of age, his parents emptied out the basement so Hodnett could begin a fish breeding business, supplying fish to local pet stores.

Now grown, Hodnett still turns over stones and seeks the critters that may live underneath, but gone is the basement breeding business. It has been replaced with an online freshwater tropical fish business based in – of all places – Sheridan, WY. According to Hodnett, the health of his fish and the high quality of his product is all due to hard work, proper quarantine and the Little Goose Creek.

Hodnett saves on cost by forgoing the brick and mortar style of commerce. This allows him to put those savings back into the stock, expanding his inventory and taking measures to ensure the fish purchased and shipped by his company are disease free. While many stores supply the typical species of guppies, goldfish and plecostomus, Hodnett’s inventory also includes more rare species of goby, puffer, rare cichlids and killifish.

Hodnett can ship fish all over North America but receives his stock from nations around the globe.
