School starts on Tuesday, August 29th for all schools within Sheridan County School District 2.

For students and their parents it can be an exciting or a nervous time for them depending on their age and grade level.

In particular are those who are getting ready to go into kindergarten.

Some students have never left the care of their parents, and they, along with their parents, could be surprised in both good and bad ways, when the school bell rings for the first time.

Justin Rohrer is the principal of Sagebrush Elementary School.

He says some schools have kindergarteners spend a few days in the classroom before the school year begins to help ease the shock and help get ready for a new daily routine outside of home.

Justin Rohrer

“Trying to talk to the students prior to the first day of school and giving them an idea of what it’s going to look like. I think that’s the importance of the Kinder-Boost that our district does as well and getting them in here those 3 days before school starts and making sure that those students are comfortable in our school and know their teachers and have a friendly face welcoming them at the front door, so they’re more likely to have a good transition into our school.”

Psychologists suggest one way to help a child to prepare for kindergarten or even pre-school, is for the parent to share their school experiences when they were youngsters.

Another way is to read stories about school, even those that involve fictional characters.
