JCSD1 Board Votes Down Stipend Pay

The Johnson County School Board discussed at length the proposal to pay stipends for spring activities that have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The question was whether or not the district should pay coaches and advisors for spring sports and other activities when their services were not given to the district.
Some board members argued the fact that other districts in the state were opting to pay their coaches and advisors their stipends, and JCSD1 should also.
Others on the board were not happy with the prospect of paying for services that weren’t rendered.
During the discussions it was learned that some coaches have stepped up to volunteer and have begun to prepare for seasons that will extend into the summer months while others have declined.
The board, in a split vote, eventually chose not to pay the stipends, but a suggestion was made by Board Chairman Dave Belus.
No action was needed from the board, and stipends will be brought before the board for approval as needed.
