The Sheridan Troopers Legion Baseball Team got a pair of statement wins yesterday to open up conference play, as the team would sweep a double-header at home vs. 4-time defending state champion Cheyenne Post 6.
In Game 1, Sheridan scored 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning and held off a Cheyenne comeback to win 5-3.
Starting pitcher Avon Barney almost went the distance on the mound, striking out 7 in the process.
In Game 2, the Troopers scored 5 in the bottom of the first and 3 more in the bottom of the 5th to complete the double-header sweep, winning 8-3.
Dyson Murner had 3 RBI’s and Frankie Maestri pitched 6 1/3rd innings in relief.
Sheridan Head Coach Austin Cowen says yesterday’s 2 wins were the icing on the cake, because the team has played 12 games in the last 11 days, and the consistent play has paid off.
“Avon Barney pitched his butt off for us. He didn’t have his best stuff, but he competed all game and then in the second game, Tyler Riesen came out, didn’t necessarily have it, but Frankie Maestri came in and just pitched his butt off, so everybody had jobs to do and then offensively it was the same thing. We probably struck out more than I would like, but when the push came to shove, we found ways to get runs in and that’s the goal.”
Sheridan is now 20-11 on the season, and have this weekend off from competition.
The team will next play on Tuesday, June 11th in a home double-header vs. Miles City, Montana.
