The holidays bring a sense of good cheer, downtown shopping, time with family and parties.

The Sheridan Police Department encourages all residents to have fun and celebrate this time of year. But the SPD is reminding residents to play it safe so everyone has a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Chief of the Sheridan Police Department Travis Koltiska and Captain Tom Ringley advised the public to drink responsibility and ensure they have a safe ride home.

Ringley reports that although many would believe otherwise, the SPD have cited less DWUIs during New Years and 4th of July than many other holidays. He believes this is due to the good planning many people undertake before heading out for the night; taking the time to ensure a secured and safe ride home before engaging in the festive activities.

Ringley suggests simply performing a self-check now and then throughout the night as not to over do it.

The SPD reminds the public that walking home is an option. But they recommend ensuring that proper attire is worn during this time of year as temperatures can drop rapidly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while hypothermia is most likely to happen at very cold temperatures, it can occur even at cool temperatures (above 40°F) if a person becomes chilled from rain, sweat, or submersion in cold water.
