Richard D. Smith

Richard D. Smith, resident of Sheridan, WY, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2025, in Billings, MT, at the age of 78 years, surrounded by the love of his family.

Richard was born to Marvin and Patricia Smith in Sheridan, WY, on December 13, 1946, in Sheridan, WY. Richard was one of 6 children. He attended Holy Name Catholic School until 8th grade and during his teen years he attended Abby in North Dakota as well as Sheridan High School. In 1966, Richard joined the Army and proudly served until 1969. During this time, he met the love of his life, Renate Mirz while stationed in Germany. Once back in the States they married on August 24th, 1970. The couple had two daughters, Tonya and Erika who they raised with strong family values and were his proudest accomplishments.  Richard worked as a truck driver for Metz Beverage, Buckley Powder and Dixon Bros, then retired as a Physical Therapy Aide at the VA Medical Center.

Richard was a strong family man, with a heart of gold. He would do anything for anyone. To know him was to love him. To Richard, family and friends meant the world. The time spent with his loved ones was his greatest treasure.

Richard loved hunting, fishing, and tinkering in his garage.

He will be missed dearly by his daughters Tonya (Ryan) Murner, Erika (Sam) Burgess, his sister Penelope (Burr) Riesen, his brothers Allan (Pat) Smith and Jerry Smith, his grandchildren Hayden Burgess, Sami Burgess, Dyson Murner, and Sydney Murner as well as his many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends. He was preceded by his father Marvin Smith, his mother Patricia Smith and one brother, Bud Smith.

A Gravesite Service with full Military Honors will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo WY.  A Celebration of Life will follow at 1:00 P.M. at the Knights of Columbus, 301 E Brundage St, in Sheridan, WY.

    I knew and liked Richard very much he treated me very well I just found out thanks for being a friend Richard
