Sheridan Police Department Lieutenant James Hill shares tips for safe Halloween trick-or-treating each year.

According to SPD Chief Travis Koltiska, those who choose to drive under the influence pose the greatest risk to public safety in Sheridan. According to Hill, the night of Halloween raises the risk of  pedestrian and automobile accidents considerably.

The SPD is asking the public to be vigilant while driving on Halloween night. Although many little ghouls and ghosts celebrated this past weekend, many will be out walking door to door this coming Thursday.

SPD Captain Tom Ringley has given many tips in the past. Ringley suggested parents trick-or-treat in groups, ensure children are using sidewalks and not crossing lawns, and utilizing the crosswalks at intersections.

The use of reflective tape on costumes or trick-or-treat bags will serve as a way to alert drivers to the children’s presence in darker situations. Children can also carry small flashlights to be more visible. Many kids enjoy cracking and carrying glow sticks and it raises their visibility considerably. Choose face makeup over masks when possible to ensure a child can see clearly and if possible, convince kids to wear light colored costumes.

With these tips, the Sheridan Police Department and Sheridan Media hope to make Halloween a little safer, so everyone can make it home safe and focus on the real important matter of the night; eating candy.
