An Arizona woman is in the hospital after being gored by a bison in Yellowstone National Park.

According to a media release, the incident happened sometime Monday morning (July 17th), near the Lake Lodge Cabins on the north shore of Lake Yellowstone.

The 47-year old woman and another individual were walking in a field in front of Lake Lodge when they saw 2 bison.

Upon seeing them, both of them turned to walk away, when one bison charged and gored the woman, who suffered significant injuries to her chest and abdomen.

She was transported by helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, and her condition is unknown.

It is also unknown how close the individuals were to the bison when it charged.

The incident remains under investigation.

Mid-July through mid-August is normal mating season for bison, and they can become agitated quicker than normal.
