Truckers are just one of many that human traffickers target for their illegal business, but law enforcement officials are getting them to their side with education.
The Truckers Against Trafficking Campaign started in 2009 and recently troopers with the Wyoming Highway Patrol were at various Wyoming truck stops to hand out education material on how to recognize the signs of human trafficking.
David Mortensen with the Wyoming Highway Patrol says one of the challenges to overcome is that traffickers stay on the move and switch up their victims so that it’s hard to detect a pattern.
“What they’re doing is they’re taking people from California and they’re moving them all the way down to Mississippi, down south or across the East coast and then they’re coming back and they’re trading people like livestock and it’s very appalling.”
Mortensen says traffickers tend to be controlling of their victims, and if you see someone being anti-social, with someone else speaking on their behalf, it could be a clue that a trafficking operation is going on.
