Two future potential ranchers from Sheridan High School will soon be studying to get more involved in the livestock industry.

Amy Peldo and Jhett West have each signed their college national letters of intent to study and participate in livestock judging.

Peldo received an offer from Casper College.

She says she’s been involved for about 6 years and explains what specifics she has to look for while judging.

“You have rather a group of 4 animals to 10, and you sort them based on best quality, whether that’s muscle shape, balance. It depends on if you’re judging breeding animals, or market animals and you go about that by just basing everything off of how well their muscle structure is and how sound they are.”

West will head to Blinn Junior College in Texas.

He says along with judging you can have to explain the reasons why you judged the way you did, and be thorough.

He adds that has helped him develop more character, which can pay off down the road.

“A great time for me to kind of gain some more speaking skills, as well as learn more about kind of leadership. It goes to show credibility for sure. If you were to judge a county fair, or do something within the meat animal industry, your prior experience in livestock judging will truly help you.”

West says he is considering majoring in agriculture business, with a minor in pre-law, and he might become an ag lawyer.

Love these two for their dedication and their hard work in FFA and in 4-H. They have found a second home in the ring and whether they win or lose, they smile and carry on.
