Quilts on Display During National Quilting Months

March is National Quilting month. Area quilters are urged to bring in a quilt to display at the center for the month. Sandy Hirz said that this year embroidered handwork is also welcome.

“Last year we had 38 quilts from 20 quilters,” Fran Felz, of the Clearmont Historical Group, said. “Quilters bring displays from thoughout the area.” Most are new quilts but some on display last year were family heirlooms, and Fran said, “We welcome those again.” Any size quilt or quilt accessory is accepted.

The quilts will be on display throughout the month of March, and the Center is open from 2-4 on Thursdays and anytime by appointment. To make an appointment or if you have any questions about bringing in a quilt to display, call Fran Felz at 758-4524.

“We had a lot of people come through last year,” Felz said. “We were really happy that so many came by.”

Also as a part of Quilt Month, the Clearmont Women’s Club will again hold a quilting bee on March 12th at the Clearmont Community Center beginning at 9 a.m. Included will be a pot luck dinner at noon. Bring your favorite pot-luck dish.

“We put the quilts together,” Felz, Clearmont Women’s Club member, said. “Most people bring their tops we quilt them together. The Women’s Club sponsors the bee but all quilters are welcome. We usually have about 20 quilt tops.” The quilts are donated to Veterans’ Home in Buffalo, and Fran added that the many of the veterans appreciate the lap quilts.

Last year the group donated quilts to the VOA and the Sheridan Foster Parent Exchange as well as to the Veterans. The Women’s Club membership has to vote on where they want to donate the quilts, and each year they make between 6 and 15 quilts to donate.
