Today we continue our look back at Johnson County’s top stories during the last year as we focus on May through August of 2021.

The Buffalo Pool Board in May suggested implementing a fee schedule for the use of the outdoor pool in Washington Park for the first time ever.

The board felt the need to set funds aside for maintenance but also to replace the pool when it reaches the end of its usefullife.

The 37th Annual Buffalo Lions Club Lake DeSmet Fishing Derby, put on over Memorial Day Weekend, may be the last one, according to organizers.

Volunteers are not as plentiful as they once were and those that do still volunteer are working more and more hours to put the event on.

The Johnson County Healthcare Center hired a new CEO in May, announcing that Luke Senden will take over the position as of July 5.

The runaway truck arrestor/catch-net system on Highway 16 West of Buffalo slowed but didn’t completely stop a flatbed semi and it continued into Mosier Gulch before coming to a stop.

The driver and one passenger walked away unharmed.

Longmire Days 2021 went on but with some necessary changes announced by the Longmire Foundation.

The actors were unable to attend in person and events were scaled back and offered virtually due to COVID-19.

Johnson County Commissioner William J. Novotny, III was arrested for Driving While Under the Influence (DWUI), reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude police, and open container.

According to court documents, early in the morning of Sunday, July 18, a report came in to the Johnson County call center about a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 90 near Lake DeSmet.

A special purpose one-percent sales tax to benefit facilities in Buffalo, Kaycee and the county, was on the ballot in the Johnson County special election August 17.

It would have boosted the sales tax rate in the county to 7% for improvements at the fairgrounds, Jim Gatchell Museum, Buffalo Golf Course, Bomber Mountain Civic Center, and others, as well as building a recreation center in Buffalo.

And those are the top stories in Johnson County from May to August of 2021.

We will have the top stories for the last four months of the year tomorrow.
