Fire Prevention Week

In 1920, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day Proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday in which October 9 falls. In 1925 President Calvin Coolidge signed a proclamation proclaiming the week as a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. Sheridan Fire-Rescue Fire Chief Gary Harnish says Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
The theme for Fire Prevention Week this year is “Learn the Sounds of Safety.” More information on this year’s theme and how you can better protect your home and business against fire can be found here.
