Sheridan Woman Sentenced for Felony Theft

A sentencing hearing for Sheridan woman charged with Felony Theft reconvened Thursday in Fourth Judicial District Court in Sheridan. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.
A sentencing hearing in late July for Laurie Gausvik was continued in District Court because of information that was presented at the hearing regarding the crime she was charged with and the amount of restitution in the case. Gausvik was charged with Felony Theft for making over $5,800 in unauthorized purchases with a debit card that was not hers. The purchases were made during the months of November and December of 2020.
It was determined at Thursday’s hearing that the prosecution, after a recent interview with the victim in the case, would not be seeking the $5,824 in restitution that was part of the original plea agreement. District Court Judge John Fenn accepted the terms of the plea deal that was reached with the State and sentenced Gausvik to 3 to 5 years in prison, suspended, in lieu of three years of supervised probation. Gausvik was also ordered to pay $250 in court costs and $750 in attorney fees.
