Main Street Reconfiguration and Parking

Main Street in downtown Sheridan was transformed over the weekend from its traditional four-lane traffic pattern to three lanes. Contractors spent Saturday night removing the existing striping pattern and prepared the street for the new, permanent three-lane striping. Personnel with WYDOT and the City of Sheridan applied the new striping Sunday. City Engineer Hanns Mercer talked about a common misconception about the new configuration while he was a recent guest on our news talk show Public Pulse.
The new three lane configuration includes one travel lane in each direction with a center turn lane, and a diagonal hatched buffer zone that is intended to offer motorists an additional four feet of room for parallel parking and exiting and entering their vehicles. The buffer zone is not a bike lane, as it is not wide enough to meet safety standards.
