UW’s Coal Refinery Field Demonstration Plant, Unlocking New Markets for Wyoming Coal
University of Wyoming Director of Institutional Communication Chad Baldwin appeared on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse and reported researchers with the University of Wyoming School of Energy Resources (SER) spent much of the fall semester overseeing construction of a coal-to-products field demonstration plant at the Wyoming Innovation Center near Gillette, a project aimed at creating new and diversified markets for Wyoming coal.
Baldwin said efforts continue to be made by the university to develop a clean coal for the energy industry but this facility is being developed by SER’s Center for Carbon Capture and Conversion and is designed to move coal beyond traditional energy use by converting it into high-value, non-energy products that can support economic diversification across the Cowboy State.

Construction of the plant will continue through the winter, while start-up and commissioning activities are planned for August.
As the project advances toward full operation and future expansion, university and industry leaders say continued support will be key to realizing its long-term economic and research benefits for Wyoming.
