Senator Lummis Applauds Trump Administration’s Investment in Abandoned Coal Mines

The Department of the Interior announced this week that more than $119 million will be allocated in fiscal year 2025 to revitalize abandoned coal mines. The 2025 funding cycle will distribute grants to 24 states with coal production history along with two tribal organizations. After applying the required 5.7 percent sequestration reduction, the total distribution amounts to $112.9 million. Of that amount, Wyoming will receive $22.1 million.

U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis said that she’s thrilled that President Trump continues to deliver on his promise to support Wyoming’s energy communities and the hardworking men and women who have powered America for generations.

The grants are authorized under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 and distributed by the Office of Surface Mining and Reclamation and Enforcement. The funds are intended to improve public safety, support local economies, and help coal communities repurpose former mines.
