Heavy snowfall is forecasted for the Bighorn Mountains in the coming days, significantly increasing the risk of avalanches and posing a threat to those engaging in backcountry winter recreational activities.

Although the Bighorn Mountains do not have an official avalanche center to provide danger ratings, nearby areas such as the Gallatin and Teton National Forests have reported considerable avalanche danger.

The National Weather Service warns that avalanche risks may escalate further with the incoming weather system.

Local professional guides have also noted that current conditions are highly conducive to avalanches.

For your safety:

Avoid venturing out alone.

Inform someone of your plans, including your location and expected return time.

Carry essential avalanche safety gear, including a probe, beacon, and shovel when traveling in snow-covered mountainous areas.

If assistance is needed, do not hesitate to call 911 immediately.
