Sheridan Memorial Hospital Doctor of Internal and Addiction Medicine Jason Ackerman made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to speak on addiction and the difficulties faced by those who have made the life changing decision to get help.
Americans spend billions of dollars on alcohol every year and December is one of the biggest months for alcohol sales. In the past during banner years for the industry, sales increased by $3 billion dollars during November and December months, reaching over $16 billion in sales, before dropping to $10 billion the following January.
For many people who have made the choice to quit drinking, the holidays pose many challenges, such as the typical holiday stressors that many people face regarding finances and family.
Ackerman said he often hears about the social pressures many people face as they begin their recovery journeys.

Patients suffering from substance abuse disorders often find social situations a challenge during the initial stages of recovery. Ackerman said support structures can often be a saving grace and many times patients place a lot of pressure on themselves only to find out that saying “no thank you” when offered an alcoholic beverage can have positive responses from family and friends.

Depending on the patient, words of encouragement can help, other patients may wish to spend time with family and friends without having to explain their situation.
Medications to help curb the craving do exist and under the supervision of a doctor can help patients through the recovery process.
If someone feels they have lost control of drinking, there is a way to recover. Ackerman encourages the exploration of options as the medical knowledge of addiction has come a long way in the last decade.
