The National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas continues this week, and Sheridan WYO Rodeo officials can say some of the best of the best were in Sheridan this past July.
Fourteen animals including six bareback broncs, five saddle broncs and three bulls were in Sheridan along with a nominee for rodeo announcer of the year and a finalist for bullfighter of the year.
Out of more than 700 PRCA rodeos that take place each year, the Sheridan WYO Rodeo is currently 26th in terms of its payout.
Zane Garstad who is the executive director of the Sheridan WYO Rodeo says with so many rodeos going on at the same time, it’s hard to predict what big name competitors will show up.
It sometimes comes down to the luck of the draw in terms of what date a competitor has his or her turn, and for the rough stock riders, it also depends on which horse or bull they end up getting paired with.
“We’re kind of sandwiched in there with some really big rodeos, of course the Calgary Stampede is on during our rodeo, also the NFR Open which is in Colorado Springs. Casper has a rodeo as well, but in some ways that is to our advantage, because it gives contestants an opportunity to hit more rodeos as they are traveling through our state.”
The National Finals Rodeo concludes this coming Saturday.
