Northeast Wyoming Unemployment Drops Below 3% In May 2023

As the number of summertime seasonal jobs in construction, leisure & hospitality, professional & business services, government, and retail trade increase in Wyoming, the state’s unemployment rate decreases as a result.
The Department of Workforce Services says the statewide unemployment rate dropped from 3.5% in April 2023 to 3.3% in May.
It was 3.3% in May of 2022.
The U.S. seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for May 2023 was at 3.7%, which is up from 3.4% in April 2023, and up from 3.6% in May 2022.
This is the first time since November 2022, the state unemployment rate is below the national rate.
The rates in all five northeast Wyoming counties were below 3.0% last month.
Sheridan County’s unemployment rate for May 2023 was at 2.5%, which is down from 3.1% in April.
Johnson County’s rate for May was at 2.7%, and that is down from 3.5% in April.
The May 2022 rates for both Sheridan and Johnson Counties was at 3.0%.
Weston County had the lowest unemployment rate in Wyoming in May 2023 at 1.9%, while Sweetwater County had the highest rate at 3.2%.
Nonfarm employment in the Cowboy State increased by 5,900 jobs from May 2022 to May 2023.
