Some children in Sheridan County need adult help getting through the juvenile court system, but lately volunteers have been coming up short.

According to the Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children Program, there are currently about 30 children in Sheridan County in the court system that don’t have adult representation.

The CASA program provides citizen volunteers for children who are involved in the juvenile court system due to abuse or neglect.

Shannon Sickler who is the CASA Coordinator for Sheridan County, explains some of the things that CASA volunteers do.

“They come on for the length of the case, they visit with the kids once a month or so, or as often as they would like to, they attend MDT meetings (multi-disciplinary team) which are set up through the court, they attend court hearings and just report back to the judge on how they think the case is going and how the kids are doing and what the kids want to see happen, if they’re old enough to talk.”
