SCSD#1 Holds Zoom Meeting Due to Weather

SCSD #1 held their regular meeting in Ranchester on Tuesday, February 21. The meeting was held via zoom due to the inclement weather Tuesday night. One item on the agenda was the schedule public meeting to discuss the four-day school week.

However, no one came forward to speak on the subject, but Superintendent Pete Kilbride talked about the results received from the community survey. There were 430 responses about the topic, and 92% felt that the four-day week it had a positive effect on learning; 96% said it was positive on family life, with more time with family, and 3-day weekends; 92% said it had a positive impact on them personally, and 97% felt operated very well. In all, 402 respondents, or 98%, wanted it to continue.

Some parents did express concerns about parents finding daycare, and some were concerned that students who were struggling might benefit from the five-day week. But the overwhelming majority was positive.

The Slack Presentation was canceled for the evening, but the TRMS presentation went as scheduled. Principal Jeff Jones talked about helping students achieve even if they are not as excited about the lesson as the teacher is. He gave the example of how a teacher has to listen to the students as well.

He also talked about intervention for students who might have missed school and need some catch up time. Another concern was missing assignments, and how to address that with the students. He said this has been a real challenge in secondary schools for ages. He said that there were four causes of missing assignments; The student was absent from school; Student doesn’t do school work at home; Doesn’t use time well in school; Or doesn’t understand the assignment.

He said they have a missing assignment incentive at TRMS.

Several teachers joined the meeting and talked about what they are doing at TRMS.

Community member John Bridges talked to the board about the life skills class at Big Horn High School, and said this is the fourth meeting he has been to in order to express his concerns.

Pete Kilbride talked about possible snow day make up days, and due to the storm the board agreed that there would probably be a snow day on Wednesday, Feb. 22, and they approved make up days on April 21 and April 28. Kilbride said they might set a record for snow days this year.

TRMS Science teacher Susie Fisher reported that the Decepticons Robotics. team which won the state competition in December and is now planning to compete at the World Competition in Houston, Texas. The story on the upcoming competition will be posted on Sheridanmedia tomorrow.
