Founded in 1981 by Raymond Plank. Ucross offers a unique, peaceful setting along with work space and living accommodations, to selected visual artists, writers, and composers since the residency was opened in 1983.

According to the Ucross Foundation, approximately 2,200 artists and creators have spent time at Ucross since the doors were opened. From every state in the U.S. as well as from many countries around the world, Ucross extends invitations to approximately 100 individuals each year, selected by an outside panel of professionals.

During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program Ucross President Bill Belcher told listeners of a unique experience that will be offered through a partnership with Sheridan College to kick-off the 40th anniversary of Ucross.

The 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States, acclaimed performer, musician and writer Joy Harjo will present a free community craft discussion at Sheridan College as well as a ticketed event of music and poetry at the WYO Performing Arts and Education Center.

Beginning at noon, Friday, Feb. 24, Harjo will guide the audience through her process of writing, composing, and performing. The event, hosted in Sheridan College’s Whitney Center for the Arts, Rooms 234/235/236, will be free and open to the public, with no advance registration needed.

Belcher told listeners a little about the esteemed work and career of Harjo and why her work is so relevant today.
