At one time, when Sheridan County was just beginning to be settled, there were numerous one-room schoolhouses scattered throughout the frontier, serving the ranchers and homesteader families. At one time there were 37 separate school districts in Sheridan County.
Today, the only one room school in Sheridan County still operating is the Slack School outside of Parkman, a part of SCSD#1, Ranchester.
That is one reason why the Slack School survives, as it would be about an hour’s ride on the bus each way for the children to attend Tongue River Elementary.
SCSD#1 September:
At the September meeting of SCSD#1, held in Big Horn on September 20th, the board honored SRO Boot Hill for his years of service to the school. Superintendent Pete Kilbride made the presentation.
Hill is stepping down because he has been promoted to detective. Brandon Masters will be the new SRO for Tongue River. Hill became a little emotional about leaving Tongue River Schools.
Hill also talked about the growth in the schools that he has seen over the years, as well as the growth in the SRO in keeping schools safe and that is ‘huge’.
SCSD#1 November. Masks not required
The board held it’s meeting in Big Horn on Nov. 16, and Superintendent Pete Kilbride gave an update on Covid-19, saying that things have changed quite a bit in the last few weeks. “We’ve had some meetings with parents and with the school nurses, and we talked with Dr. Ian Hunter about the continued use of masks.”
He said the number of cases is down by 321. “We were in the yellow, which is good. We moved to light green last week, which is even better. During the same time period, the last two weeks in October of 2020, there were 154 cases, now there are 104.”
The board voted to accept Kilbride’s recommendation on masks, and while they are strongly recommended, they are no longer required, starting on Wednesday, Nov. 17. There was applause from the nearly 30 people who attended the board meeting.
SCDS#1: December: Girls Softball Discussion
Starting a girls’ softball team, was one topic of discussion at the Wednesday December 7 SCSD#1 Board of Trustees’ Work session.
Kilbride said that this is an on-going discussion. Thirteen other schools in Wyoming have a girls’ softball team. Jacob Zarpentine activities director at Tongue River High School, said that several girls showed interest, but he wasn’t sure there were enough to field a team. He also felt that the softball team might pull athletes from the track and field team.
Al Sparkman Big Horn High School Principal, said in Big Horn there were several girls who said they were interested in forming a team.
He also mentioned that baseball and fast pitch are highly skilled sports, and one does not start as a ninth grader and learn to be proficient a couple of seasons later. He also felt the idea merited more discussion.
