January: Harvey Purcella honored for 37 years of service

At the Jan. 10, SCSD#2 board meeting, the board celebrated Harvey Purcella’s 37 years of exceptional service in the Transportation Department.

According to Shawn Stevens, SCSD#2 Transportation Director, “Harvey started his school bus driving career on route #1 in December 1984, the same route he currently drives. He has compiled 250,000 miles on route #1 alone during his career.”

Scott Stults, superintendent, added this about Purcella. “For 37 years the students on Harvey’s bus have been blessed to be able to start and end their day with a man that always has a positive attitude and treats each of them with dignity and respect. He truly cares enough to know every student by name, and we hope he continues for many more years to drive Route 1 as he daily makes a difference in the lives of our students.”

May: First Graduation from the new JC Shiffer School

The John C. Schiffer Collaborative School held the first graduation from its new building on Saturday May 28 at 1 p.m., in the Whitney Center for the Arts at the Sheridan College Campus. There was a full house of family and friends attending the ceremony.

There were 19 seniors in the class of 2022.

October: Coffeen School, transportation department and Lawsuit

The SCSD#2 addressed many issues at the Monday, October 3 meeting. Shawn Stevens, Transportation Director recognized the bus drivers, saying they have driven over 22,000 miles in the first month of school. “I’ve seen this group go above and beyond in many challenging situations,” he said.

Trustee Ed Fessler mentioned the lawsuit filed last year by several parents protesting the mask mandate, said he was pleased to report:

Stults also talked about the Nationwide Blue Ribbon School Honor that Henry A. Coffeen School achieved. Coffeen is one of only 297 schools in the nation and there were only two schools in Wyoming recognized in 2022.

November: Wilson honored for years of service

Sheridan County School District #2, at the November 14 meeting, honored Chairman Sue Wilson for her years of service at SCSD#2. Wilson taught as SCSD#2 for 33 years and served on the board for eight. She retired in 2022.

Trustee Fessler said of Wilson and Stults. “The past two years have been challenging. Some have attempted to cause great division between our community and the district. You two have kept the board and district going in the right direction.”

Superintend Scott Stults awarded her with a plaque for her service, and had this to say:

The board presented Wilson with a trophy and a bouquet of flowers. Wilson talked briefly about her years as a teacher and some of the challenges that the board faced during the past two years.
