The unofficial start to the 2022 summer traveling season in the nation’s first national park, was not as busy as it has been in years’ past.

According to recent numbers released by Yellowstone National Park officials, there was a 34% decrease in visitors for the Memorial Day weekend in 2022, compared to the same weekend in 2021.

The numbers and percentages don’t include Memorial Day itself.

Percentage-wise the East entrance saw the biggest drop in numbers at 39%.

The West entrance saw the biggest drop in actual numbers, as nearly 4,600 fewer visitors passed through this Memorial Day weekend, compared to the same weekend last year.

The weather did have an impact on the weekend, as rain and snow fell for most of that time period.

The park reopened Dunraven Pass between Canyon Village and Tower Falls in time for the weekend, but had to reclose the section of road for a time due to weather concerns.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the park.
