Boating and fishing season starts Memorial Day weekend in both of the National Parks in Wyoming, and the parks want to remind anyone going out on the water to make sure they’re not accidentally bringing something into the lakes that shouldn’t be there.
Boaters and anglers must clean, drain and dry all of their boating equipment to minimize the risk of introducing an aquatic invasive species at the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.
The aquatic invasive species that pose the most concern are quagga and zebra mussels and if any are discovered, it could force park rangers to shut down access to park waters for a time.
There are a number of boat inspection stations nearby or at some of the entrances to both parks.
In north-central Wyoming, boat inspections are no longer being conducted at Tongue River Water Reservoir State Park.
The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department has determined that the reservoir is a low risk area for AIS’s.
Boat inspections are being conducted at the Sheridan rest area near the I-90 and 5th street exit, and at the I-90 rest area between Hardin and Billings.
