Sheridan HS Football: Among the many lessons that the Sheridan High School football team learned this past Friday were that you can not score when you do not have the ball, and it is hard to stop the other team from scoring, when there’s a short field to defend.
Time of possession is not a stat that is regularly kept in High School Football, but if you watched Friday’s loss at Natrona County, the Broncs’ defense was on the field far longer than the offense was.
Starting field possession was also a difference maker as there were a number of times when the Mustangs started a drive on Sheridan’s side of the field.
Head Coach Jeff Mowry says a lot of errors were made and those were the 2 that stuck out the most.
The Broncs will look to regroup this coming Friday at home vs. Laramie.
Incidentally at the time, Sheridan’s 59-game winning streak was the 2nd longest active winning streak in the USA, before this past Friday.
The team with the longest active streak, Garden City, New York, had their 68-game win streak snapped yesterday, meaning both of the top 2 longest active winning streaks, ended within 72 hours of each other.
Sheridan HS Tennis: The Sheridan boys tennis program has not had much success over the course of its existence, but things are starting to turn in their favor.
Last year the Broncs won the team state title for only the second time in school history.
This year one senior brought home a rare individual championship.
At the state meet this past weekend in Gillette, Ben Bujans became only the 3rd Sheridan boys player in school history, to win the state championship in boys #1 singles.
The last time that happened was in 2012 and before that, 1984.
Last year he finished 3rd.
Bujans lost against William Freymann of Jackson in the North Regional Championship match one week prior, and redeemed himself with a 3-set win this past Saturday.
He says impatience got the better of him in the regional tournament and explains his strategy in the state championship match.
Head-to-head Bujans went 2-1 vs. Freymann, winning a dual last month in Teton County.
The Sheridan boys placed 3rd in the team standings this year at the state meet, behind Cheyenne Central and Jackson.
Sheridan College Rodeo: The Sheridan College men placed 2nd and the women were 6th in the Pat Hamilton Memorial event this past weekend at the Sheridan County Fairgrounds.
Christopher Nelson was 3rd in the saddle broncs, Chaz Dewey was 2nd in the bareback riding and Koy McAllister won the steer wrestling event.
He was in the short-go of saddle broncs as well, and says he prefers that event over others, but he does steer wrestling and calf roping on occasion, so that he does not get rusty in those events.
The Central Rocky Mountain Rodeo circuit continues this weekend at Lamar Community College in Colorado.
Major League Baseball Playoffs: The best 2 out of 3 wild card round starts today.
First pitch between Philadelphia at Atlanta is at 12-noon.
The Chicago White Sox at Houston is a 3pm start time.
Boston at the New York Yankees begins at 6pm, while the Chicago Cubs at San Diego get the late game at 8pm.
Game 2 is scheduled for tomorrow and Game 3 if needed will be played Thursday.
As for Milwaukee, the LA Dodgers, Tampa Bay and Cleveland, those 4 teams get a free pass into the divisional round, and each team will play 1 of the 4 survivors beginning this coming Saturday.
