The carcass dumpster between Dayton and Ranchester has been relocated. This dumpster is typically located at the highway pullout halfway between the two towns on Highway 14. However, fire operations are using that area, Game and Fish has moved the dumpster to Highway 345, the old highway between Ranchester and the Acme exit.
Wyoming Game and Fish Public Information Specialist Christina Schmidt spoke on the relocation during an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse.

Game and Fish reminds the public that once the edible portions of meat have been removed from deer, elk or moose, the remaining carcass can be left in the field at the site of the kill.

This is to limit the potential environmental spread of chronic wasting disease. According to WGF biologists, evidence suggests that CWD is transmitted via saliva, urine, feces, or even infected carcasses. Animals may also be infected through the environment via contamination of feed or pasture with CWD prions (which can persist for many years). The most likely route of exposure is through ingestion.
By dumping carcasses in a different location from the site of the kill the risk of contamination of the dump site is vastly increased.
