SCSD#1 Board Recognizes Speech and Debate Champions

At their Tuesday, March 19 meeting, the SCSD#1 board of trustees recognized the BHS Speech and Debate Team, that recently won the state championship.

Chairman Clint Krumm, introduced saying,

Big Horn High School Principal Al Sparkman talked about the team and coaches. He said they are a special group of individuals. He added that the goal of Big Horn High School is to be #1. He also said that Big Horn’s goal is to be the last team standing.

He gave credit to the coaches, Dustin Olsen and Jay Arcarese as well.

Olson added, “We really are family, and these kids work hard.” He also mentioned that tickets to “Frozen Jr,” which will be held April 5-13, are selling out fast.

The team received a standing ovation from the board and the visitors.

There was also a presentation by the Big Horn Middle School and what is happening in that school. Included was Wy-Topp data, and many of the staff talked about some of the educational field trips and competitions they are engaged in this year. Cody Ball, reading teacher, talked about One Book, One School, where the students and teachers read one book for the year. This year’s book is The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown.

Two visitors signed up to speak to the board, about policies concerning library books, Cindy Hagen, librarian at Big Horn High School and Middle School, and Kelly Bridges community member.

Hagen said that words matter in the policy, and she was concerned about some of the wording that was added to the policy.

She that according to the policy wording, many science materials relating to human anatomy, Greek and Roman mythology and the Bible, as well as many artistic works, would be removed. She said that materials are chosen by staff with expertise in that area.

Bridges had a different view of the wording.

The board agreed to give the policies in question more time and give more consideration to the opposing viewpoints when re-writing the policies. The did approve several other policies on first reading.

In the student representative report, Isaac Adsit, Big Horn Student, reported that he did Chairman Krumm’s homework from the last board meeting, in talking to students about how extra-curricular activities helped them grow.

In other business the board voted to approve 2024-25 administrator contract renewals.
