Big Weekend Ahead on the Sheridan County Local Sports Calendar

WINTER COACHES SPORTS AWARDS – It’s the athletes that win the games, events, and championships, but the coaches have something to do with it.

Sheridan high school coaches Tyson Shatto (4A boys wrestling) and Taylor Kelting (4A girls indoor track and field) were named coaches of the year, for the winter 2022-2023 sports season, by the Wyoming Coaches Association.

Shatto coached the Bronc wrestlers to their 2nd state championship in school history (the other in 1990), while Kelting coached the Lady Broncs indoor track and field athletes to the school’s first state championship.

Kirk McLaughlin of big horn was named assistant coach of the year in indoor track and field.

LACROSSE – Sheridan will be sport central this weekend, with soccer, track and field, and American Legion baseball…and there’s another sport that’s starting to get attention and it is on the schedule as well.

The Sheridan Mavericks boys lacrosse team is in their 2nd season of playing, and are scheduled to host games vs. Cheyenne and Cody Saturday at the old Normative services field.

On top of that, the club teams from the University of Wyoming, Denver University and Montana state as well as a number of youth leagues will be in town competing against each other.

The Mavericks play in the Montana lacrosse league division 2 and are 2-2 on the season so far, winning both of their games this past weekend against Butte and Helena.

Junior Jaidn Roberts says the sport is tougher than it looks, especially for those who are new to the game, but it can be fun once you get used to it.

There is also a girls lacrosse team in Sheridan, they are 0-5 on the season and are scheduled to play their home games on May 13th.

AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL – The Sheridan Troopers will host round robin games with Cheyenne and the Billings Scarlets on Saturday and Sunday.

SOCCER – The Lady Bronc soccer team lost 3-0 at Thunder Basin Monday they hit the road for games at Laramie and Cheyenne South Friday and Saturday.

The Broncs lost 4-0 at Thunder last night they will host Laramie Friday JV’s at 4:00 and the varsity go at 6:00, Saturday they host Cheyenne South at 10:00 and noon.

TRACK AND FIELD – In track and field action this week weather permitting Sheridan high school will host the annual “Gary Benson” Border War invitational Thursday events are scheduled to start at 1:00

.

The annual “Dan Hansen” invitational is still scheduled to get underway with events Saturday morning at 10:00.

ROCKIES BASEBALL – The Colorado Rockies lost 14-3 against Pittsburgh last night, the series continues tonight first pitch is at 6:40 you can hear Rockies baseball this season live on Smart Talk 106.3 FM.
