Erle John Simpson

E.J. Simpson was born in Sheridan, Wyoming on December 9, 1961, to Erle and Betty Simpson. Growing up, E.J. spent much of his time running around on his family’s ranches: the 7-Up Ranch, the 21 Ranch, and his favorite, the Wagon Box Ranch. While attending Sheridan High School, E.J. poured himself into the football program, earning All-State honors as a Sheridan Bronc. E.J. then attended Northwest College in Powell for a brief time before returning home to take over his family’s ranch after the passing of his father Erle. In 1986, E.J. married Sheryl Lockwood, and together they raised two sons on the ranch. He was later remarried in 1998 to Teri Chapman, raising two more sons together.
For many years, E.J. enjoyed caring for his cattle at the Wagon Box Ranch. He found a special joy atop his beautiful horse “Eagle”, whether working the ranch or on backcountry elk hunts with his closest friends. As an entrepreneur, E.J. operated the “Wagon Box Dump Truck and Backhoe Service” for many years.
E.J. was well known throughout the Story and Sheridan communities. E.J. was known for his gift for gab, and he never went anywhere without bumping into a friend or making a new one. His favorite ways to relax were grilling steaks on his deck, riding around his ranch, hunting with friends and family, four wheeling up Penrose Trail, cheering on his sons in sports, rooting for the Denver Broncos on Sundays, and enjoying a good meal (he could usually “sweet talk” his waitress into bringing him a side of hash browns even if they weren’t serving breakfast).
E.J. is survived by his sons: Jess, J.D., Justin, and Jackson; as well as his brother Dan, and sisters Cindy, and Robin.
There will be an informal reception to celebrate E.J.’s life on Saturday, May 24, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Story Woman’s Club. Food will be served at 12 p.m., and all are invited.

So sorry to hear of his passing. It was always nice to stop and visit no matter how long it had been since we had seen each other.

Kalvin was a neat guy who had a quick wit and a quick smile. When Paula was with him, you could tell by their chemistry they really loved each other. I was blessed to be one of the Kugler family’s pharmacists and got to see them there, around town, and at church. Its so hard to wonder the why of Kalvin’s death, but one thing is certain- the where of he is now: in the presence of His Savior. One can almost hear Kalvin say “You take your time, but no matter how long it takes- I’ll be right here waiting…and you can count on that.” Peace to Paula and the boys.
