A Cheyenne School bus driver has been arrested for driving a bus with high school students on board, while he was under the influence of alcohol.

Sixty year old David Williams was arrested in Goshen County, on suspicion of DUI and possession of an open container while operating a moving vehicle.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol reports just before 5pm Wednesday (February 16th), complaints were called in regarding a school bus that wasn’t staying in its lane, while traveling northbound on US Highway 85 between Cheyenne and Torrington.

A trooper pulled the bus over near Hawk Springs, and when the door to the bus opened, the trooper could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle.

Williams was arrested after failing a field sobriety test.

Additional tests at the Goshen County Detention Center showed he had a blood alcohol content of .156, which is almost double the legal limit to drive in Wyoming.

Another trooper searched the bus and found 2 bottles of vodka, and 1 of them was open.

Williams was also given a warning for lane use and for following the school bus ahead of him too closely.

The students on the bus were members of the speech and debate teams from Cheyenne East and Cheyenne South High Schools.

The teams were on their way to an event that was being held in Spearfish, South Dakota.

Laramie County School District 1 officials dispatched a substitute bus driver, so the teams could continue their trip, but are not commenting on the situation, citing it is a personnel issue.

The trooper could smell a “strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle”. But none of the students or chaperones who were inside the bus said anything? Sounds like we’re not getting the full story.

In Montana, no seat belts required to save money, not lives. Alcohol tester may seem extreme but losing a busload of students is horrific.
