The Sheridan City Council met for their second regular business meeting of September Monday night. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.

Council Approves Animal Ordinance on Second Reading

Ordinance 2233 that deals with animals within the City of Sheridan, was approved by the Council Monday night. There were three amendments that were approved with the ordinance on second reading, the most notable being the removal of a section of the ordinance prohibiting the declawing of cats within the City. When the Council considered the animal ordinance on first reading in early August, Councilman Jacob Martin introduced an amendment that declared cat declawing as animal cruelty. That amendment was approved with the ordinance on first reading. The Council, at their August 16 meeting voted to table second reading of the ordinance due to concerns over the declawing prohibition. The amendment to remove the declawing prohibition was approved by a vote of 5-2, with Councilors Martin and Shawn Day voting to keep the prohibition in place. Councilor Steve Brantz voted in favor of the amendment and said the City Council shouldn’t be telling people what they can and can’t do with their animals.

Councilman Day explained why he voted against the amendment.

The Council also approved a resolution allowing Mayor Rich Bridger to sign the WCDA Grant Applications. The Council received updates on the Kendrick Golf Course, sales and use tax, the Food Group and Food Bank of Wyoming. We’ll have more from the Council meeting in future stories.

What a severe waste of time and resources. Martin needs to take his big city ideas and personal agenda and hit the road. He is wasting taxpayers money on an issue that should have zero government reach.

What resources and taxpayer money was wasted on this? From what I’ve seen, Martin is one of the few council memebers who actually puts any time and research into all of city council business. While most show up grossly unprepared and uneducated. Since when did acts against animal cruelty become big city ideas? It pertained to the ordinance being discussed. I, for one, am proud of Martin and Day for taking a stand. They will always have my vote. You can’t agree with everyone on everything and judging city officials over one issue is incredibly ignorant and why this country is in trouble! They both have done many great things for Sheridan.
