According to a Bighorn National Forest release, it is thanks to a partnership with the Wyoming State Trails program, funds were obtained to replace a degraded 260’ plus puncheon and improve trail tread on North High Park Trail 059 on the Medicine Wheel Ranger District.
According to the BNF, in late August, the trail crew worked with the Region 2 Specialty Pack string to haul in timbers for the puncheon. Assisting were engineering, fuels, fire, range, and recreation crews locally and from the Shoshone National Forest.
Together, they moved approximately 150 mule loads that carried 40,000 pounds of material several miles up the trail. Crews disassembled the dilapidated puncheon and packed out the old timbers. BNF trail and recreation crews also built a trail reroute and improved an entrenched trail with check dams to prevent further erosion.
The Wyoming State Trails Crew is currently reassembling the new puncheon along with some additional improvements. Project planning and preparation for this project goes back several years according to the BNF. In the release, the BNF thanked all those that worked hard to accomplish this task and reduce deferred maintenance.
