Although tourists, visitors and adventure seekers are advised to keep their distance from wild animals, there is a way to see how someone can stand up to one of them.

A mural of a modern day bison and it’s ancestor, the bison antiquus, is being worked on at the Museum at the Big Horns.

Museum officials say they already have ancient weaponry that was used to hunt either bison or the bison antiquus, and the mural will also have a measuring device to show visitors where they would stand, should they ever come face to face with a bison.

Lisa Norman from Images West Studio in Buffalo is the one putting the murial together.

She says people standing next to the murial are much safer compared to standing next to the real thing.

Having them both painted at the size they would actually be will help give people an idea that yes, the American bison is large standing at full maturity 6½ feet at the top of their shoulder hump, but a bison antiquus was upwards of almost 15 feet long and over 8½ feet at the hump.

Norman says the mural of the bison should be finished by the end of this week.
