The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a new scam circulating. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.

Phone Scam

The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office issued a media release Thursday about a new scam that has surfaced where local residents receive phone messages from a scammer claiming to be a deputy with the Sheriff’s Office. The scammer is requesting a call back regarding a very urgent matter and they provide an out-of-state telephone number.

The Sheriff’s Office is cautioning residents to not provide any financial or personal information over the phone unless you’re certain the person with whom you are speaking to is a representative of a trusted company or governmental agency, and preferably only calls you generate. No local law enforcement agency will request funds over the phone and will never solicit or accept funds through Green Dot or other prepaid credit cards. If you feel like you’ve been contacted by a potential scammer, you should hang up immediately and contact local law enforcement to report the incident.
