School Opening Goes Well, Student Numbers Down

Johnson County School District Superintendent Jim Wagner gave a report to the school board on how the new year opened, saying overall the opening “went well.”
He did say that student enrollment numbers are down, and that the state has changed how the district tracks enrollment and how they take attendance.
He said as of this year, if a student is not in the building on the first day, they must be dropped from enrollment, as opposed to in the past where the district could wait 10 days before the student was dropped.
The district was expecting student numbers to drop slightly from last year, with data showing a 25 to 35 student decline before the COVID-19 pandemic.
The district will have more concrete numbers to report to the state on October 1st.
As far as how the district is dealing with the COVID-19 guidelines, Wagner said in his written report that it will be important for staff, students, and the community to continue following the district’s Smart Start Plan for everyone’s safety.
He quoted the recent increase in COVID cases in Sheridan County, and said the district is trying to avoid a similar outbreak in Johnson County, which would impact how long school buildings would remain open to students.
Wagner asked that everyone stay vigilant an follow guidelines for everyone’s safety.
He reported the district has purchased and scheduled staff development items relating to COVID-19 and have acquired supplies and information for each school in the district.
Wagner will submit the list to the state for CARES Act reimbursement.
Also, CARES funding will be used for the cost of the Acellus Virtual School Program.
