SCLT on the Ridgetop and Gillispie Draw Natural Areas
Sheridan Community Land Trust has announced that additional land near the Soldier Ridge Trail System will be permanently conserved, ensuring open space, productive ranchland and community recreation opportunities remain available for generations to come.
On Dec. 9, SCLT announced the creation of the Ridgetop Natural Area and the Gillispie Draw Natural Area, including the Hidden Hoot Conservation Easement. Together, the additions permanently protect nearly 544 acres, bringing the total conserved land on Sheridan’s western flank to nearly 2,175 acres.
Sheridan Community Land Trust Director of Conservation John Graves and SCLT Director of Recreation Jared Koenig appeared on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to discuss the acquisition, its future and potential recreational uses.
According to Graves, the project was made possible through work with landowner Don Roberts, who partnered with the land trust to create a vision that balances conservation with limited housing. Roberts donated land to Sheridan Community Lands LLC, a sister entity of SCLT. The land will be part of a conservation subdivision that allows some housing while ensuring a larger portion of the property remains conserved.

Koenig said the area is already serving multiple purposes, and additional recreation possibilities have been proposed as planning continues.
