A Look Back on Crazy Woman Canyon Closing for Summer 2025

One of the main stories in Johnson County in 2025 was the closure of Crazy Woman Canyon for the spring and summer months.

In May, the US Forest Service announced that Crazy Woman Canyon, Forest System Rd. 33, would not open for the summer season due to a bridge replacement project.

The project was expected to run through September 2025.

Crazy Woman Canyon Road has an annual seasonal closure from March 1 through June 20, and the closure gate was not opened this past summer due to the bridge work.

The first project, led by Johnson County in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration, involved replacing the bridge located at the bottom of Crazy Woman Canyon.

Additionally, the US Forest Service replaced a bridge located further up the canyon during the same period.

The work was necessary to make improvements to critical infrastructure to maintain public access.

Residents and travelers were encouraged to plan alternate routes accordingly.

The road through the canyon was reopened on September 12.
